Glamour Effect

Ever wonder how the girl on the magazine appears to have a bright glare coming off the edges of her body and that she has a little bit of sheen on her, herself? This tutorial will help you to do exactly that. Here is the final result of what we will be teaching you:

In this tutorial I will show you a relatively easy way to make any image glamorous in Photoshop, so lets begin

Find a picture that you want to use.

I used an image of Britney Spears.
1.jpg

First thing to do is smoothen out her skin some.

Select the Dodge tool. With these settings.
2.jpg

And brush around her skin until it’s a few shades lighter.

Should look something like this.
3.jpg

Now select the Burn Tool with the following settings.
4.jpg

And lightly brush any dark parts on her skin.

Now change the size of the brush to 12px.

And zoom up on her face.

Now start brushing around her eyes.

Then change the Range to Midtones and after that change it to Shadows.

And go over her mouth a bit as well.

Now it should look like this.
5.jpg

Now duplicate the layer.

Then desaturate the layer.

And add a Gaussian Blur.
6.jpg

Then set the layer to Lighten and change opacity to 66%

Now merge the layers.

Now add a Gradient Map.
7.jpg
8.jpg

Then change the layer to Darken.

Now click back on the black and white circle and go to Brightness/Contrast and add the following.
9.jpg

Then go to Levels and add the following.
10.jpg

And now you are done.

Here is my result of this glamour effect.

I think original picture is much better, but this is personal opinion. I have idea to use it in other kind of pictures.

    Thanx for good tutorial

  3. Callie Says:

Thanks. It was a bit easy but my result didn’t turn out like yours. Mine was black and white. O_O

  4. Edward Says:

    very nice.

  5. Her skin is much too pale and the gaussian blur was too high; it almost ruined the quality of the photo. Great tips otherwise though =)

  6. Callie, you should make sure that the gradient is in that way it stands ther, if you pres reverse, and it turns from white to black, it’s wrong ;-), it should go from black to white ;-)

  7. noemi Says:

the effect is useful and i agree with the previous comments.
but also, eye makeup should never look like that.
if you want to beautify someone digitally you should know the basics of how people do it with makeup.

Loved the tutorial ! sort of new with the functions of photoshop. I learned alot about the levels and brightness/contrast otherwise! It seems this tut is more for pictures of women with makeup then men without!

  11. ramsh Says:

    thank you.

  12. Tom Pearce Says:

Ow my god! she looks like a zombie with her white skin and too dark eyes… this is not at all how they make “glamorous” pictures! The most effective way is to duplicate the picture layer, gaussian blur the whole thing at 8px and set the layer to soft light (then usually set the layer to something like 70%)

  13. Johnathan Taylor Thomas Says:

Hi, I think since I was an actor for Home Improvement that my comments weigh more than you regular people, so here they are: This tutorial sucks so much balls, it makes a whore look like a church going catholic nun.

  14. Me Says:

    I agree with Tom Pearce.

Just duplicate the layer, gaussian blur it a bit then set it to overlay or soft light.

You get a much better result and it’s quicker too than the method you show here.

  15. Pete.K Says:

I do not agree with this on a good way to create the glamour look. Persoanally I feel the correct way to do a glamour look is to duplicate the layer, use a gaussian blur on about 30 then set the obacity to your liking. Then Layer Mask the type layer use a brush and un blur the objects such as eyes, mouth nostrils jewerly etc…and it look outstanding…

Another thing to keep in mind is hair, if you switch the brush to a gray color it will bring the hair back from the blur. :)

    Thanks!!!

  16. sphynxylynxy Says:

To Mr Taylor: Personally I appreciate the tutorial as well as the constructive comments as a basis for good ground learning, but when you have someone with an ego the size inversely proportional to the size of his testicles, they always come out “sounding” as if they are better than anyone else, note stress on the word sound!!

What the hell does being an actor past tense have anything to do with critiqueing a photoshop user/artist.

Get off your self-made platform. Nobody watches Home Improvement.

We are all too busy with our lives and experimenting with photoshop

  17. louiesah Says:

after following all those steps into my picture, i could say the numbers used into the effects are not applicable for all… nice tut though.

  18. Arindam Ray Says:

Not enough man…this one is really bad bad tutorial…Sorry for the comments but that’s what came to my mind after viewing the 2 pics….really the skin color messed up the whole thing…and the black shade beneath the eyes really makes her look like a whore!!

  19. Hi,

The tutorial in general could be good, but not for these kind of photos.
The main thing in this tutorial that in my opinion is totally messed up, is that you’re using a photo that already is “Glamour Effect” on.
The tutorial could be useful when you’re doing a zombie horror image. But she definitely doesn’t look beatiful anymore.
